my group perpare work

My group has three members who are AlJahdali, AlMuhannad A, Hofstater, Brittany M, and I. Our group topic is punctuation. We want to remind people the importance of punctuation. In a paper, grammar, logicality, and structure are all very important. Sometimes, people will ignore the punctuation because of inconspicuous.
We decided to each member write a part. AlJahdali, AlMuhannad A wrote commas. Hofstater, Brittany M wrote period, question mark, exclamation, quotation marks, and hyphen. I wrote semicolon and colon. We used the websites that teacher gave us to find each punctuation definition. We tried to find detailed definition and one definition one example. AlJahdali, AlMuhannad A also used a table to show us how to use comma. I found semicolon has four basic rules and colon has two basic rules.

When we have a presentation, we will explain a rule and give an example. This way can make listeners learn more about punctuation.  I think using example is the best way to show listeners how to use punctuation in different situations. Our goal is to show the basic rules of punctuation and how to use them. We also want to tell listeners a perfect paper needs everything perfect including punctuation.
We found the definition in these websites:

Group topic: Punctuation

Semicolon
Use semicolon to separate items in a list, when some of those items already contain commas.
Example: "I bought shiny, ripe apples; small, sweet, juicy grapes; and firm pears."
Reference: http://www.writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/Semicolons.html Spet 11.2012
Use a semicolon between closely related independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction if the clauses are already punctuated with commas or if the clauses are lengthy.
Example : "Some people write with a word processor, typewriter, or a computer; but others, for different reasons, choose to write with a pen or pencil."
Reference: http://www.writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/Semicolons.html Spet 11.2012
Using a semicolon between independent clauses linked with a transitional expression.
Example: "The five nations respects the abilities of all its people; therefore, both women and men participate in making tribal decisions."
Reference: http://www.writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/Semicolons.html Spet 11.2012
Use To announce, introduce, or direct attention to a list, a noun or noun phrase, a quotation, or an example/explanation.
Lists example: “We covered many of the fundamentals in our writing class: grammar, punctuation, style, and voice.”
Noun/noun phrase example: “My roommate gave me the things I needed most: companionship and quiet.”
Quotation example: Shakespeare said it best: “To thine own self be true.”
Reference: http://www.writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/Semicolons.html Spet 11.2012
Colon
Use a colon to separate titles and subtitles, to express time, to cite a law or biblical passage, to end a salutation, to separate the place of publication and the publisher in a bibliographic entry.
Example: Richard Nixon: The Tarnished President
4:00 p.m.
Dear Rachel:
West, Gerald. How to Write Best Sellers. New York: Henry James Publishing, 1973.
The point of final game was 104:97
Use a colon to connect two sentences when the second sentence summarizes, sharpens, or explains the first.
Example: “Religion and politics can be sensitive subjects: many people hold opinionated views and are easily offended by other peoples' remarks.”

Period [.]: Use a period at the end of a sentence (The dog ran fast.), command (Hand in your homework by Friday.), indirect question (The teacher asked why Frank was late to school.), or for abbreviations (Mr. Smith went to Texas.).
Question Mark [?]: Use a question mark at the end of a question. (What are you doing?)
*Question words: Who, what, where, when, how, whom, whose, and which
Exclamation Point [!]: Use an exclamation point at the end of an empathic declaration, interjection, or command. (Do it now! or What are you doing! Stop!)
Quotation Marks [“ ”]:  Use quotation marks to set off material that represents quoted or spoken language. Quotation marks also set off the titles of things that do not normally stand by themselves: short stories, poems, and articles. Use quotation marks to enclose direct quotations. (My mother always said “Be careful what you wish for”)
Hyphen [-]: Use a hyphen to join two or more words serving as a single adjective before a noun (a one-way street), with compound numbers (sixty-three), to divide words at the end of a line if necessary, and with the prefixes (ex-husband).
What is the apostrophe? The apostrophe indicates that a number or letter has been omitted. Moreover, apostrophes are also used to show possession or ownership.
Commas

What is the comma? A comma is a punctuation mark used to indicate separation that in spoken English is proved by a brief pause (or breathing space).

There are six rules for using commas.
1.      Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction (and, or, but, nor, yet, for, so) that separates two independent clauses. For example: One of our teachers gave us a lot of homework for next week, but he changes his mind and moves the due date.
2.      Use a comma after an introductory word, phrase, or clause that comes before a main clause. For example: Strangely, no one has suggested that Watergate gave us a "new Nixon."
3.      Use commas around words, phrases, and clauses in the middle of a sentence when they aren't essential to the meaning of the sentence. For example, this was not, in other words, an invisible 56 percent of the population.
4.      Use commas between items in a series. For example: Three reasons for the closing were insufficient enrollment, poor instructional materials, and inadequate funds.
5.      Use commas before and after a quotation within a sentence. For example: The band leader said, "Once the simple marching drill is learned, we will work on more maneuvers."
6.      Use a comma before an afterthought or contrasting element. For example: To understand a particular culture, we must consider the society as a whole, not its individual parts.

There are some examples how to use them.
 He is= he’s
Does not= doesn’t

LEO topic

My topic is Semicolons and colons. I think this topic looks small, but it shows the detail in a paper. Readers can through semicolon and colons know what this author grammar level is. That is why I choose this topic; it is small but cannot be ignored.
There are some rules about semicolon and colon
Using a semicolon between independent clauses linked with a transitional expression.
Example: The five nations respects the abilities of all its people; therefore, both women and men participate in making tribal decisions.
Use a semicolon between closely related independent clauses.
Example: Toni Morrison uses parabolic storytelling in her writing; she seldom writes in a linear mode.
Use a semicolon between items in a series containing internal punctuation.
Example: In Walden, Henry David Thoreau encourages individuals to find their own way of life rather than conforming to the ideas of others; to seek the truth and beauty of life in nature; and to learn about themselves and the world by experiencing life instead of just studying it.
Use a colon to signal the reader that a series of words, phrases, or clauses follows a complete sentence.
Example: The baseball coach claimed that the team's success stemmed from four things: consistent hitting, solid pitching, good fielding, and excellent teamwork.
Use a colon between independent clauses if the second summarizes or explains the first.
Example: Religion and politics can be sensitive subjects: many people hold opinionated views and are easily offended by other peoples' remarks.
The point of final game was 104:97
In conclusion, when we read these rules, we can have more clearly about how to use semicolon and colon. Teacher find two same level papers and do not how to decide which is better. I think teacher will through details like punctuation to make a decision. If we want to make our paper perfect, we should avoid any mistakes even punctuation. Details determinate success or failure.

favorite and poorest stories

My favorite story is raul the drummer from Chile. The author put 13 items in the right place. I really enjoy reading his story. The author make the story completely and correct grammar. The plot also very interesting. The structure is good and make reader understand easily.

The poorest story I think is talk about visiting museum. The author just lists the 13 items through what she sees. I think it is boring to reading, because I can guess what happen in the next. Actually, I have a mixed in the story. I think the author can make the story completely and interesting.

A long time ago, there was a rich Spanish family who were landlord with a large farmland. This family

When he arrived at a new place, he would collect some interesting thing such as a wooden model of boat, foreign coins, wooden head, a ceramics, and a small plot. One day, the landlord’s son back home with his new collection that is a jade. That is his favorite collection. He used the ruler to record its length, wide, height. After that, he put it into drawer.
One day, the woman went to landlord’s son room and cleaned the room. She was cleaning the blanket. At this time, the landlord’s son back home and found the jade was disappeared. He looked like mad and checked the all the corner. However, he did not found the jade. He told his father what happened. The woman was to be the suspect who stole the jade. The landlord was very angry, because landlord trusted her and gave her good reward. But she stole his son collection. The woman tried to explain again and again that she did not steal the jade. Whatever the woman how to said, the landlord and his son still did not believe her. Then the landlord called the police. The police took the woman to police office and asked her why steal the jade. The women said again she did not steal the jade.
The landlord sat on the chair and became calm down, and then he asked his son if he see the woman steal the jade. The son said, he did not see it, but when he back room, she was cleaning the desk. At the same time, landlord’s wife back home and saw some differences in their face. The landlord told her what happened. The landlord’s wife was surprised and told them they were wrong and the women really not stole the jade. The wife said, because tomorrow is her son birthday, thus she took the jade out and make it to be a stamp as a birthday present. Then, the wife gave the stamp and a bag of chestnut that is his favorite snack to his son. The landlord was very repentant. At last, the woman said, I was never angry with my family.
